Good news

A ruling that widens the 7%

Italy’s tax agency has answered a question from an Irish pensioner who moved his tax residence to Italy. His former employer pays him both a pension and a one-off end-of-service lump sum directly, with no pension fund in between. The answer, Risposta n. 197 of 2 November 2026: both can be taxed at the 7% flat rate, because he also receives a foreign pension. A ruling covers only the case it answers, but it shows how the agency reads the rule.

A priestess of the Messapians?

Excavations in Manduria’s Parco delle Mura Messapiche, run by the regional heritage office and funded by the Ministry of Culture, studied 24 burials from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Tomb 17 stands out: an inscription names a woman with the title “thabara”, read as a priestly role, and the walls carry blue and red painted meanders. The archaeologists call these readings preliminary. One idea under study is to show the painted slabs in Manduria’s archaeological museum.

Good news

Trees are coming back to Viale Mancini

The town’s public works office approved a revised design for Viale Mancini on 27 October. The avenue will be planted with trees again, the paving changes to a material better suited to a historic street, and the roundabout in the station square gets safer. The works, funded by Italy’s recovery plan, now run to 31 December 2027, and the town will agree the restart with the builders in the coming weeks. Digging near an ancient Roman canal continues under constant archaeological supervision.

Good news

Manduria is a 7% town

Pensioners who move their tax residence here from abroad can opt for Italy’s 7% flat tax. Check your case with a tax adviser. Our plain-English guide: manduriashire.it/seven-percent.

One thing to know

Buying your main home here can cost less tax than you think. If you buy a house from a private seller and move your residence to the town within 18 months of the purchase, saying so in the deed, the registration tax is 2% instead of 9%. You can also ask for it to be worked out on the cadastral value rather than on the price. Alessandro Gargano, of Agenzia Gargano Immobiliare in Manduria, explains the 2% to every foreign buyer himself, and the notary explains it again when the costs of the deed are worked out. In his experience, no buyer has ever lost the relief by breaking its conditions. More in our guide: manduriashire.it/buying-a-house-in-puglia. Ask the notary before the offer.
